Thomas Pabst explains in great detail how to equip Creative's Nomad MP3 jukebox with a larger hard drive. He uses WinHex to copy important start sectors from the original jukebox drive to the new one. |

I've read everything I found about how to Upgrade my Nomad (D.A.P.) Jukebox. Each time I follow the explanations, I find that I've got a 6 GB disk instead of a 20 GB, so there isn't free space at all. I make a Disk Image from my old 6 GB disk in local disk C (first 65536 sectors), later I Clone Disk, 65536 sectors to copy in the new 20 GB disk, and the new disk works perfectly in my Nomad, but I only have 6 GB of space. So I'm making the same images that I had, but it doesn't read the rest. Nomad works fine, but I need those 14 GB more! I've made more than 6 images, I don't know if I should copy (make Image) the entire 20 GB disk and not only the first 65536 sectors, or what else can I do? PLEASE, CAN SOMEONE HELP? Thanks in advance. |

Did you select the physical disk as the source? You mention "local disk C". You must not select a logical drive as the source. Likewise, the destination must be a physical disk, too. |

Hi, I've been unable to clone from the Nomad Jukebox original 6GB disk. The Disk is not formatted with known file system (FAT, etc...). It's 9.5mm disk, which has been connected to my PC via USB port. I Using winhex I can only see the disk as a logical disk (removable media), not as a physical disk. When trying to clone first 65536 sectors (or edit disk) I get Error. I've tested the geometry configuration with other disk 9.5mm (this time win98 formatted) and it worked fine. For unknown reason (for me at least) winhex cann't reach this 6GB disk. please help. Thanks, Tal Fuhrer |

If you can't see your 6 GB disk as a physical hard disk, please try with a different kind of connection or on a different computer. And please note only the official full version allows writing disk sectors (and thus cloning). |

I used the following to upgrade my 6GB DAP Jukebox to 30GB :-- Beware: Never connect/disconnect IDE or hard disk power cables while your PC is turned on, any attempt to do so may corrupt your hard disks or permanently damage your hardware. Requirements: 1. A fully licensed version of WinHex installed, which can read/write 65536 of raw physical disk sectors to/from an image file. 2. A mother board with 2 IDE connectors, each supporting 2 IDE/ATAPI devices and with a BIOS which supports huge hard disks. A RAID IDE connnector (as found on an IWill KK266-R) will _not_ work e.g. 3. No IDE devices on IDE connector 2 and IDE channel 2 Master enabled in BIOS. You will probably need to temporarily disconnect your CDROM/DVD drive. 4. At least 32MB of free hard disk space, lots more if want to backup you MP3's (if so, download JBProtect too). 5. A free PSU power connector e.g. from your CDROM drive. 6. This cable or equivalent: Supplier: http://www.dabs.com Manufacturer : GENERIC Product : 3.5" TO 2.5" HDD Adaptor cable Quicklinx : WDTWS * There is a drive power connector on the 40 Way (3.5") end. 7. A massive new 2.5" hard disk e.g. Supplier: http://www.dabs.com Manufacturer : FUJITSU Product : MHN 30.0GB UDMA100 Quicklinx : 10Y9WS See these articles on how to do it: http://www4.tomshardware.com/consumer/00q4/001110/mp3-13.html http://www.nomadness.net/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=8 http://www.nomadness.net/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=16 See here for old firmware, etc: http://www.nomadness.net/download.php?op=viewsdownload&sid=1 |

I recommend you avoid Fujitsu 2.5" HD's, they don't take abuse well, their actual power-off shock resistance is crap. My Nomad Jukebox was in Creatives padded leather cover when it fell 1.5 metres, afterwards the 30GB MHN2300AT had seeking problems and when I finally persuaded it to seek it had loads of groups of bad sectors on one of the four surfaces (i.e. a bad head), bummer! Better go with IBM or other quality manufacturer, never with Fujitsu, it's a false economy! WinHex wasn't much help either, it was hopeless with lots of bad sectors, it has no bad sector list support, so was too damn slow. |

With regards to your problem of not being able to ustilize the remaning 14 GB and only being able to see the 6 GB space, I want to inform you that the the solution to recover the remaining 14GB is very easy..but you will lose all the data on your juke box so when you restart your nomad juke box "if the firmware is piror to 2.56 then when you see the word "loading" press and hold "stop" +"play", but if the firmware is 2.56 or a bove then when you see the word loading press and hold the follwing button "fax" + "down" + "the middle display button" which is above the play button. By doing so you will get to the disk menu, chose format ..and then you will be able to recover the remaining space I hope this help thanks and best regards |

Eyerytime I try to do so there is an error: An error occured while writing to harddisk 2. How did You do it. At the moment I work under XP as Admin under winhex 9.62. It's an Fujitsu-Drive 20GB. I even tried a second adapter, in order to copie directly --> Nope! Plesae help me! Even direct under wesselburg@onestop.de Thank You! |

You cannot write to a disk with the evaluation version of WinHex. You would need to pay for the full version. |

Hey, what are you doing??? You might not want to hear it, but there's no need to use any tool (like WinHex, Norton Ghost, etc.) Just plug an empty or windows partitioned (no matter) harddrive into your player, enter the Rescue Mode, do a "format all", and off there you go with a perfectly prepared Harddrive. greets Tom |

if it is just to get over your mp3's, copy it back on your computer and then back later on with firewire it is by far quicker (and easier) to transfer your stuff, and even with usb it's worth a think with your 6Gig drive and besides no jukebox will have problems with winhex-created partition headers later on when your drive gets full. (a partition-header, especially when it's compressed/encrypted, is not the same on a 6Gig and on a maybe 30Gig drive!) (to enter rescue mode press STOP while resetting/repack batteries and on creative screen release STOP and press PLAY quickly, then release it again) regards Tom |

Sorry, the above rescue mode is for jukebox 3, but such a rescue mode is existent on any creative hd-based mp3-player. so check your user-guide, the pdf's on the cd, or creative's knowledge-base for further info BUT BETTER FORMAT IT WITH YOUR MP3-HARDWARE !!! so long Tom |

I used the image file from nomadness.net above on a 40GB drive and it works great. It's the 2.56 firmware so the diagnostic mode is EAX+Middle+Down instead of the original. I think there is a program that protects existing files during format if you image the entire old drive but I didn't mess with it. 6GB isn't worth the hassle but I will probably do that when I upgrade to 60GB; over 24hrs to copy 40GB files with USB1 but it still boots in less than 20sec after the first time. I also used an external USB/Firewire 2.5" enclosure instead of an internal adapter which works just as well with Winhex. |

I just put an IBM 40 GB drive in my Jukebox. I tried to load the OS in rescue mode, but all I could get was the error message "Cannot find OS". So I ran Bootcode, which is supposed to rescue a jukebox with this error message. Then I got another critical error: "Must reload OS". At that point I tried uploading OS version 4.00. But the computer wouldn't recognize that the Nomad was hooked up. Using Norton Ghost, I did a full copy of the original drive to my desktop HD. Then I copied that image to the new IBM disk, and now the JB works fine. Has anyone figured out how to access more than 6 GB, without a full format? I'd like to keep my music on the drive. Another question: How can I reformat my old 6 GB drive so it will be recognized by Windows? Now, I can see it in the BIOS and the Device Manager, but Windows Explorer nor DOS recognize it. Thanks, Kevin |

Just put a 30 GB Fujitsu in my Nomad Jukebox to replace the 6GB drive that was in there. I got the image copied to the new drive and started it up. Held down eax+down_arrow+center_LCD_button and got to the disk utils screen. I chose format, then format again. Now I have a screen that reads "ALL FILES AND DATA WILL BE DELETED! ARE YOU SURE?" with CANCEL and FORMAT being my options for the LCD buttons. I pressed the FORMAT (i.e. right side LCD button) to format but there is no change on the display. Is this right? And how long do you think it will take to format the 30 GB drive? |

How long did it take to format the 20GB drive ina Jukebox C upgrade? I have been waiting here for 2 hours with a blank backlit screen. Am I missing something? A 20GB drive usually takes about 30-40 mins tops to format. |

I just acquired an old 6gig JB from a friend with the intent to use the HDD to upgrade the 3.1gig drive in my laptop...everything went well for the laptop, but i'd like to wire up a laptop DVD-ROM to the electronics. Interesting theory, i'd need a bootable copy of the OS on every DVD i burn, however. Unfortunately, im kinda of dumb, and i scraped the 6gig disk without backing anything up...so i need a copy of the OS. any ideas? |

I have the same problem with "preparing library" hang. When I have tried to copy the first 65536 sectors I get bad sector (prolly hdd has physical problems). Now I am trying to get an image of the OS and write it on another HDD. I haven't tried the Format thing, but if OS cannot load completely, I guess it's kind of useless. |

I tried to upgrade my Creative Jukebox from 6GB to 20GB using all the methods described here. Including Tom's Hardware article. 1. Clone the first 65536 sectors of my old drive to my new drive. 2. Clone my new drive with the image provided by nomadness.net. 3. Clone my entire 6GB to 20GB. But everytime after doing all the above, I keep getting this "Must Reload OS" message for all the above procedure. I am wondering if there is a problem with my WinHex setting. When I open the image file I realized that on the left status information, my mode is set to "TEXT". Is this the problem? When cloning physical drive like Jukebox, should I change it to "HEXADECIMAL" or "BINARY"? If this is the reason, how do I change it? Where is the OS stored in the Jukebox hardrive? Been trying all kinds of things for past few days now and have had little sleep trying various methods described above. I have the personal edition of WinHex. Any info is greatly appreciated. |

> I am wondering if there is a problem with my WinHex setting. No, when you open the image file and the edit mode is text, that merely means that the blinking cursor is in the ASCII text part of the window. You could click anywhere in the hexadecimal part, then it will be "hexadecimal". This is absolutely not related to cloning or imaging. When cloning, all data will be copied 100% exactly and treated appropriately as binary data. |

I upgraded my Jukebox 1 to a 20GB IBM-DJSA-220, and everything went smoothly at first. However, when trying to populate it with music files, it seems to overheat. Every 70 - 90 files transferred, the disk starts to grind, and the transfers fail (player not responding). If I put the player in the freezer for 5 minutes, I can get another 70 - 90 files transferred before it fails again. Has anyone else had this problem? What do you do about the excessive heat? |

Hi, My 20GB HD had bad clusters from 20512 to 20600 and my nomad do not respond to the format mode (It hungs). Is winHex able to : 1) delete all the drive. 2) fix the bad clusters not to be used again so then I´d be able use again my HD in the Nomad loading the firmware Thanks |

Bad clusters should be specially marked by the operating system when formatting the partition. WinHex cannot do that automatically. |

Clusters are marked as bad in the file system data structures inside a partition. If you delete a partition, these file system data structures are deleted as well, the clusters are no longer defined by the file system (in a sense, they do not exist any more), and thus they are no longer marked as bad either. |

So, even if a hard drive has too many bad sectors within the system/OS area to be used in a Nomad, you could still use the Hard Drive (formatted fat or Fat32 so the sectors are marked as bad) in a portable case as a handy USB storage device..:-) |

Also tried the image file from nomadness.net I am using latest firmware (non-beta) Also If I don't enter the maintenance, then it just hangs at "Preparing Library" Please e-mail me if you have a fix for the above problem. Thanks, Anuj Garg |

Oh and only use the firmware downloaded from Creative....all the "enthusiasts" sites provided firmware which didn't work in my experience. |

My old 6GB drive don't work no more, so I've bought a new 60GB FUJITSU drive. I've followed all the instructions here to upgrade the jukebox, including: - Zero filling drive - Running bootcode updater - Running firmware - Copying 8mb image to start of disk using Winhex - Copying approx 40mb image to start of disk using Winhex But whatever I do it still won't go to the disk utils menu when I hold down the buttons, it just stays on 'must reload os'. What else can I do to make this work? |

I bought a kit off Ebay, which is basically the Creative Jukebox minus hard drive, so I also bought a 60GB (Hitachi) drive. Originally installed firmware 2.94 from the CD, but got the 'Preparing Library' problem, so zero filled the drive, reformatted it (NTFS) and reinstalled. Now I have the Critical Error Load OS screen, which I'd expect. However, whenever I connect the player up to install the firmware, whether it's 2.94 from the CD, or 3.3/4.01 from downloads, I get the following message: Your player is not connected, please connect the player and restart the application. I know the player is connected, because the PC (which is running XP by the way) recognises that *something* has been plugged into the USB port, plus it installed 2.94 from the CD before, so I'm somewhat mystified. Any ideas? |

OK, I think the above might be down to my laptop, as I tried the desktop and it recognises the player. However, I still get the 'Preparing Library' problem with 2.94, 'Critical Error Load OS' with 3.3 and it hangs halfway through boot up with 4.01 (with zero fills and reformats for the drive in between). The only thing I haven't tried is copying the 8MB image mentioned above to the start of the disk - will this replicate the firmware or do I need to do this then install the firmware (which version?)? |

Hello People, I was in the same problem as most of the people here. I had a hard drive that died in my Nomad Jukebox 20GB. So I started fiddling with the Nomad and a backup hard drive that I had lying around the house. I found the easiest way to upgrade the nomad was; Step 1: Install Hard Drive In Nomad Player Step 2: Use Bootloader (Found on Nomadness) to rid myself of the "Could Not Load OS" Screen Step 3: Then I find myself facing the screen "Reload the OS" Step 4: Use the firmware update (I used 2.98), to get a newer OS installed. Step 5: Hold down the maintenance keys. (EAX, Middle Softkey, and Down Arrow) Step 6: Format Hard-drive using the format fuction in the maintenance menu. Step 7: Enjoy a working nomad jukebox without having to use Winhex, Norton Ghost or anything else like that. Step 8: If you need help you can email me at u0mxq "at" unb.ca Justin |

I DID IT...SO EASY.. NO NEED FOR WINHEX (WHICH IS COOL BY THE WAY)... I'VE JUST UPGRADED MY NOMAD JUKEBOX 20GB (D.A.P) WITH A TOSHIBA 40GB HARD DRIVE. I JUST PLUGGED THE H.D. INTO THE NOMAD...DOWNLOADED FIRMWARE 4.1 (FROM WWW.NOMADWORLD.COM) AND EXECUTED IT. AND THAT WAS IT!!!!. BY THE WAY THE 40GB WAS MY LAPTOP H.D....WITH 4 NTFS PARTITIONS AND THERE WASN'T ANY PROBLEM....THEN WITH THAT FIRMWARE I TURNED IT ON...AND AS SOON AS THE "LOADING MSG" APPEARED I PRESSED "LIB + EAX" UNTIL THE UTILITIES MENU CAME UPON. THEN I FORMATED AND I WORKED. ANY DOUBT..JUST WRITE ME. |

Hello I just replaced my old broken hard drive with a new 4200 rpm 40gb Fugitsu hard drive, so now I go to turn it on, ok now it says Critical Error Must Reload OS. Now from what I heard theres two ways to format the hard drive, holding the play and stop button and holding eax, middle soft key and the down button (pressing these buttons when loading), they dont do anything it just loads and says Creative (Like it should) and then it says critical error must reload os, I'm currently running Windows XP on my desktop, I do have 2.96 and 4.01 firmware upgrades on my computer, when I go to load these it tells me that I currently have 2.95 on my CNJ and it will load and detect my juke box then it will tell be to restart my jukebox, so I do just that, and guess what...... I'm back to square one......Critical Error Must Reload OS. I'm really bummed out and quite discouraged here. Would someone please help me here, I do work with computers quite often, but as the tree said to the lumberjack.......I'm Stumped!!! :\ Could I get some words of wisdom or ideas that will get my poor Jukebox running again? I would soooo appreciate it!! Thanx. |

FOR ALL DISK Upgrades: Just finished the upgrade of the Nomad Jukebox 6gb to a 40GB toshiba disk. I've connected the disk to the PC with a 2 1/2" USB bay to my PC. Then I've formated it with NTFS ( quick Format) Then I've opened the Jukebox subsituted the 6 gb ( btw it's a Fujitsu 6 gb Disk inside) with the new 40 gb Toshiba. Powered on and the message "Cannot find OS" appears. SO after installing the Creative Driver for the jukebox in my XP machine I've connected the Jukebox to the PC and launched the bootloader utility. It didn't work. SO I went to the support website from Creative dOwnloaded the latest Firmware update ( version 2.98 ) http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download2.asp?Product_ID=241&dlcentric=7054&Product_Name=NOMAD+JukeBox&OSName=Windows+XP . Update the Nomad with this and it works. After this you just need to reboot The nomad and when you've got the Loading on the screen press - Eax + middle button + scroll Down to access the Rescue mode and do a format of the disk ( this will ask for three or for confirmations and it will finish when you'll see the Lib list ) To check the available size go to eax + system information- AND you'll be VERY happy ;)) I've done this because all my Mp3 files are on my XP machine ( so now I'll have some Hours of file transfer between the XP and the Nomad...) |

I have an old Creative Nomad Jukebox 2LX. The other day while transferring files into it, the screen froze on my computer and i was unable to close the playcenter, so i finally just removed the usb from the player. The Jukebox restarted and now seems to have no files. when i go into tracks, artists, albums, genres, it simply displays a back arrow. This player was nearly maxed out ( this may have caused the freeze up while transferring files?). Now under JUKEBOX SETTINGS/JUKEBOX INFORMATION it still says Total Space: 19056MB Free Space: 875 MB Track Count:0 Album Count :0 Playlist Count:0 so the data might still be on there, but how do i get the player to recognize it again? |

5. Remonter ce DD, ça marche !!! |
